Caring for the environment
Our environmental policy includes commitments to review the performance of every site on a regular basis to reduce the potential impact and prevent pollution. Principal drivers are efficiency, reducing waste and continuous improvement.
We will endeavour to implement an Environmental Management System (EMS) to promote:
- Sustainable procurement
- Waste reduction
- Reduction in electricity consumption
The first step towards improving our environmental management is to measure our existing performance. The four key areas of environmental impacts are:
- Energy
- Water
- Waste
- Pollution
We will endeavor to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) and collect and evaluate data on the inputs and outputs of materials, energy and waste of a product over its entire life cycle.
We strive to acheive the following:
- Reduce the amount of raw materials used
- Using locally sourced, recyclable materials
- Avoid using toxic materials
- Use clean manufacturing technology to minimise emissions during manufacture
- Improve energy efficiency
- Use durable materials to increase product life
- Reduce packaging
- Reduce transportation
In conjunction with this we will use DEFRA Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) to set targets for our business performance and monitor improvements. This will also allow us to track improvements in profitability, and improve environmental performance.
These include:
- Resource use
- Emissions to land
- Emissions to air
- Emissions to water
We will also consider the use of KPI's to measure the environmental impacts of:
- Our supply chain
- Our products after they have left our business
Objectives and goals
We will achieve our goals by:
- Promotion of the waste hierarchy, the focus being on waste minimisation. Any construction and office waste that is produced, we will ensure that as much as possible is reused or recycled.
- Encouraging sustainable procurement by sourcing and promoting product ranges to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution.
- Reduce energy consumption by turning off lights when not required and minimising use of electric plant and heating usage.
- Conservation of water, we will minimise waste wastage as much as possible by ensuring that taps are fully turned off when not in use and that any leaks or plumbing repairs are carried out immediately.
- Minimising where feasible and making our emissions as harmless as possible by maintaining all company vehicles and machinery to the highest standards.
- Meet or exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the Company.
- Get staff on board with effective communication campaigns on what we are trying to achieve as a company,
via newsletters, posters, emails, team meetings and training sessions.
